Things To Do After A Traffic Accident

Did you know? Over 400,000 road accidents were recorded in Malaysia from January to September last year - almost 45,000 incidents per month and 1,500 everyday across the country!

While there are things you can do to stay safe on the road, no matter how careful you are, actions of others on the road are beyond our control. Although many are aware of the increasing number of accidents recorded in the country, few know what to do if they were involved in one.

Here are some tips:

 

  1. Stay calm and check for immediate dangers or body injuries

    • Make sure to exit the vehicle if it’s severely damaged or poses danger. Under safe conditions, move your car to the roadside, switch on the hazard lights, turn off the engine and use a warning triangle.
    • Ensure everyone is okay. Call 999 for Malaysia Emergency Response Services if there’s a medical emergency. 
  2. Note important details and take photos of the accident site

    • Take note of the time and location of the accident, as well as snap photos of any damages and injuries. Where possible, take pictures of the accident scene before moving your vehicles to the roadside. These will come in handy when filing an insurance claim.
  3. Exchange information

    • Gather the other party’s details, such as name, phone number, driving license number, car registration number and insurance policy number.
  4. Contact your insurance agent or company

    • Check with your agent or insurer whether there are additional details to capture and be advised on the next steps to take. 
  5. Lodge a police report

    • File a report within 24 hours. This is mandatory as part of the insurance claim process.
  6. Avoid unknown tow trucks

    • Wait for your insurance company’s tow truck service. Do not fall for random operators or strangers offering tow services or offering help to fix your vehicle.
  7. Send the car to the workshop

    • Direct the tow truck to your preferred workshop. We recommend sending it to one of your insurance provider’s authorised / panel workshops to facilitate the claim process.
